SANTA CRUZ COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT

Office 4

What's at stake? Six years ago, Katherine Akao, then a deputy county counsel, unseated a judge who had been appointed by then-Gov. Pete Wilson. Now, longtime conservative activist Jeff Bosshard wants to unseat Akao.

KATHLEEN AKAO

Who is she? Kathleen Akao, 51, spent three years of her first term on the bench as Juvenile Court judge, where she has focused on helping families and children caught up in the justice system. She has also served on the executive committee of the California Juvenile Court Judges association. Akao is a San Jose State University graduate who got her law degree at Santa Clara University School of Law.

JEFF BOSSHARD

Who is he? Jeff Bosshard, 57, has worked as a Legal Aid lawyer and a public defender and has served as a judge pro tem, stressing that he did so on a freelance basis rather than as an employee of the government. Bosshard, who received his master's and law degrees at UCLA after earning his bachelor's at Stanford University, has practiced law for more than 30 years. Bosshard said that if elected he would treat everyone with respect, make certain that people's rights are fully explained and protected and would promote justice for all.
