SAN MATEO COUNTY BALLOT MEASURES

County Service Area No. 1 Measure A (two-thirds vote required)

If passed, this measure would impose a special tax for fire protection and extended police services in San Mateo County.

No arguments for, or against this measure were submitted.

Atherton Measure C (two-thirds vote required)

If passed, this measure would approve a special tax for municipal services in Atherton.

Pro: Supporters say unlike other towns and cities, Atherton does not have commercial development generating business taxes to supplement property taxes. They say Atherton must rely upon the special tax for basic city services. They say if the special tax isn't continued, reductions would be necessary in road work, drainage improvements and in the town's staff, especially among police employees.

Who's for it? Nanette F. Chapman, Atherton mayor; Dianne M. Fisher, Atherton vice mayor; Alan B. Carlson, councilman; Malcolm H. Dudley, councilman.

Con: Opponents say this parcel tax was defeated last year by a wide margin. They say the approval of the special tax is premature and unnecessary. They say to review Atherton's financial procedures and take corrective actions takes more time than this election permits. They say the town's resources are more than adequate to maintain the police staff and other services well beyond the general election in November.

Who's against it? Sandy Crittenden, Atherton Voters Against Special Tax Measure C
