A great excuse to go to the beach

This map was created for a 1995 Mercury News special news project on the erosion of California beaches. Artist Reid Brown, photographer Judith Calson and I went to the beach at Santa Cruz with a piece of cardboard cut out in the shape of the nearby California coastline. Reid and I put the form down and quickly scooped out the sand around it. We then jumped back as the surf washed in, and Judith snapped the picture. We repeated this several times. I then combined and manipulated the images in Photoshop, and the final product was assembled in Adobe Illustrator.
