The first real Cold War Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia. Americans were stunned when the Soviet Union out-medaled the United States 98-74, setting a tone of Cold War competition that would last until the fall of the Soviet Union 35 years later. These were the first Games held outside Europe or the United States.
