The Vietnam War Games
In the midst of political chaos in America, the Olympic Games were held in a Mexico City racked by student demonstrations. The most dramatic moment of the Games took place on the victory stand after the 200-meter sprint. Two American athletes -- Tommie Smith and John Carlos -- bowed their heads and gave the Black Power salute during the playing of the National Anthem. Furious American Olympic officials threw them off the team and they never again represented the United States.
