The Black September Games

The Munich, Germany, Games should be known for the seven gold medals of swimmer Mark Spitz, the delightful Olga Korbut, who turned gymnastics into a premier sport, and the fact that they were the first Games to be televised live around the world. Instead, the Games became a symbol of international terrorism as members of the Black September movement took 11 Israeli athletes hostage. In a shootout with German police, five terrorists and their hostages died.
